What is a Dissertation
Usually submitted in the final semester of undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses or programs, the dissertation describes a long piece of academic writing based on a student’s research topic or question. A dissertation is a research project that allows students to present their findings based on their chosen propositions, topics or questions.
Also, a dissertation involves a lot of written documentation and research that equips students with necessary and independent skills for numerical skills, project management, and problem-solving. Although a dissertation can prove difficult and the longest assignment at the university, it is highly rewarding, especially when a student chooses a topic that they are passionate about. Two main types of dissertations depend on the course of the study; empirical dissertations and non-empirical dissertations. An empirical dissertation is best suited for science-related topics and primarily involves collecting and analyzing original data through interviews, surveys, lab experiments, or observations. A non-empirical dissertation involves collecting and analyzing data from primary or secondary sources. The non-empirical type of dissertation aims to analyze and interpret theoretical data based on the student’s or researcher’s understanding. It is mostly applied in humanities and arts-related topics.

Qualitative and quantitative dissertations?
A qualitative dissertation reflects on the qualitative research that a doctoral student would employ throughout their studies and, therefore, relies on non-numerical data.
During the preparation of the qualitative dissertation, the data collection methods may include participant observations, focus groups or interviews.
On the other hand, a quantitative dissertation employs quantitative research methods or approaches to collect, analyze and interpret data, meaning students must focus on the current information or theories to interpret their findings.
How long is a dissertation?
The length of a dissertation varies between study levels and types and, in most cases, the topic of study. Usually, a dissertation requires a lot of research and writing; therefore, it takes about one to two years to complete. However, if one manages their time properly, they can complete a dissertation in less than twelve months.
